World Retina Day: Understanding the Retina and Protecting Your Vision

Every year, World Retina Day (the last Sunday in September) shines a spotlight on the importance of retinal health and awareness of retinal diseases. At Austin Retina, our mission is to protect and restore sight by caring for the retina, one of the most vital parts of the eye.
What does the retina do?
The retina is a thin layer of tissue lining the back of the eye. Think of it as the “film” in a camera — it captures light and converts it into signals that the brain interprets as images. Without a healthy retina, clear vision simply isn’t possible.
Why is the retina important?
The retina is responsible for sharp central vision, color perception, and the ability to see fine details. Everyday activities like reading, driving, or recognizing faces all depend on a well-functioning retina.
How do retinal diseases affect vision?
When the retina is damaged by disease or injury, vision can become blurred, distorted, or even lost. Many retinal conditions develop silently, meaning vision may not change until the disease is more advanced. Common retinal conditions include:
- Age-related macular degeneration (AMD): A leading cause of vision loss in adults over 50.
- Diabetic retinopathy: Damage caused by diabetes affecting blood vessels in the retina.
- Retinal detachment: When the retina separates from the back of the eye, potentially causing vision loss if not treated promptly.
Who treats retina conditions?
Retina conditions are treated by retinal surgeons, who are ophthalmologists with additional fellowship training focused on diagnosing and managing diseases of the retina, vitreous and macula. Retina specialists use advanced imaging, laser therapies, and surgical techniques to address complex and sight-threatening conditions.
At Austin Retina, our fellowship-trained retinal specialists bring over 100 years of combined experience, delivering expert vitreoretinal care and personalized treatment to every patient.
Preventing Retinal Disease
While not all retinal diseases can be prevented, you can take steps to lower your risk and protect your vision:
- Schedule regular, comprehensive eye exams, especially if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of eye disease.
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet rich in leafy greens and omega-3s.
- Manage chronic health conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.
- Quit smoking, which is a known risk factor for AMD and other eye diseases.
- Seek prompt care if you notice vision changes like flashes of light, new floaters, or sudden blurriness.
